Canterbury-on-the-Lake is a not-for-profit continuing-care senior living community in Waterford, MI. Progressive Companies worked closely with the organization's leaders to simplify the aging-in-place journey for residents, with priority consideration for seamless transitions between independent living, assisted living, memory care, and long-term care — all within the same facility. Canterbury-on-the-Lake offers peace of mind for residents and their families, enabling them to enter at the care level that best suits their needs — making the experience both comprehensive and flexible.

For Canterbury’s new memory care wing, The Meadows, Progressive crafted a 28,000-square-foot addition. This innovative, 32-bed wing contains spacious private and semi-private rooms, each equipped with private bathrooms and personalized "memory boxes" to facilitate resident identification. Our design promotes inclusivity, featuring a kitchen with multi-level surfaces to encourage active resident participation in cooking. Strategically positioned community spaces create welcoming areas for family visits and foster interaction among residents.

Extensive memory care features include individual thermostats for personalized comfort, fully enclosed patio and porch areas for safe outdoor enjoyment, and a circular design allowing residents to wander securely. Distinct elements — including a piano, fireplace, kitchen, and community areas — enhance spatial navigation and foster meaningful connections.

Canterbury-on-the-Lake also entrusted Progressive with significant renovations in 2017. Originally built in 1994, the skilled nursing wing and three-story health center required updates. We collaborated closely with organization leaders to modernize these high-traffic areas. Renovations to the main dining area and activity room included new furniture and updated fixtures. Private and semi-private rooms received updates with new wall colors, carpeting, and modernized furniture and fixtures. The rehabilitation room underwent renovations for improved space utilization and a contemporary aesthetic. Both projects were successfully completed in 2017.
