Progressive Companies recently completed a 21,000 square footrenovation of UNC Hospital’s Ground Floor Neuroscience existing ENT andPsychiatry Clinics, converting the space into a new Emergency DepartmentTransition Unit (EDTU). The 36-bed EDTU was created to improve the careavailable for medical and behavioral health emergencies by providing more spacefor their staff to handle the increasing volume in the busy emergencydepartment.
Designed under the 2018 FGI Guidelines (emergency department examrooms with ligature resistant areas), the EDTU consists of 12 dedicatedbehavioral health beds, 12 dedicated medical beds, and 12 beds that can betransitioned between patient populations as needed. Creating an environmentthat is both safe and therapeutic for patients, visitors, and employees was amajor priority for UNC Health.
Features of this transition unit include durableand hygienic surfaces that are easy to clean and tamper resistant to betterprotect patients from self-harm. Extra support spaces were included in the finaldesign for employees to have a larger workspace.
