Michael Perry, FAIA, Elevated to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows
Michael Perry has been elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), one of the highest honors recognized in the architectural profession. This distinction recognizes architects whose work, leadership, and service have made a lasting impact on architecture and the communities it serves.
Fellowship in the AIA is awarded to fewer than three percent of AIA members nationwide and reflects sustained excellence over a career marked by influence, integrity, and dedication. Michael’s elevation acknowledges the depth of his professional expertise and his unwavering commitment to advancing architecture through thoughtful design and leadership.
Throughout his career, Michael is known for his devoted approach to design, empowering architects and client teams to create inclusive environments through a Universal Design (UD) approach that reimagines how the built environment serves people of all abilities. At Progressive Companies, he has influenced the design of nearly 200 projects in 30 countries and pioneered the world’s first project accredited by the Global Universal Design Commission, advancing global standards and transforming accessibility. Additionally, he secured US copyright for the Universal Design Assessment and Certification tools, establishing standards for organizations to better serve diverse users. His work reflects a deep passion and dedication to architecture as both a craft and a responsibility.
"Achieving Fellowship status is a distinction that takes commitment to excellence in the architecture profession that positively impacts society as a whole,” said Meredith Bronk, President and CEO at Progressive Companies. “Mike's kind yet unyielding approach to inclusivity in design and sharing knowledge reflects this commitment. He's the kind of guy who quietly makes all of those around him better, and we are proud to celebrate his well-deserved recognition."
Beyond his project portfolio, Michael has demonstrated a sustained dedication to the profession itself. He is widely respected for his commitment to sharing knowledge, mentoring emerging professionals, and contributing to conversations that strengthen architectural practice at local, national, and global levels. His leadership exemplifies the values of service, collaboration, and lifelong learning that define the College of Fellows.
Michael will now carry the FAIA designation signifying his induction into the AIA College of Fellows, a group of architects recognized for their exceptional contributions to architecture and society.
“Being elevated to the AIA College of Fellows is both an extraordinary honor and a moment of deep gratitude,” commented Michael. “To me, it signifies not only recognition, but responsibility to continue championing thoughtful, equitable design, to mentor and support emerging professionals, and to contribute meaningfully to a profession that shapes how people live, work, and connect. This distinction is a reflection of the many mentors, colleagues, clients, community partners, and family members who have shaped and supported this journey. Architecture is, at its core, a collaborative endeavor, and I share this recognition with all of them.”
